5 Things We Need to Know About Technological Change

By nate  //  theology  //  Comments Off

Neil Postman offers 5 very important truths about the relationship between humanity and technology. Though not a Christian (he is Jewish), his points should not be missed by the church in this ‘information era’.

  1. 1) All technological change is a trade-off. I like to call it a Faustian bargain. Technology giveth and technology taketh away. This means that for every advantage a new technology offers, there is always a corresponding disadvantage.
  2. 2) The advantages and disadvantages of new technologies are never distributed evenly among the population. This means that every new technology benefits some and harms others.
  3. 3) Embedded in every technology there is a powerful idea, sometimes two or three powerful ideas. These ideas are often hidden from our view because they are of a somewhat abstract nature. But this should not be taken to mean that they do not have practical consequences.
  4. 4) Technological change is not additive; it is ecological. I can explain this best by an analogy. What happens if we place a drop of red dye into a beaker of clear water? Do we have clear water plus a spot of red dye? Obviously not. We have a new coloration to every molecule of water. That is what I mean by ecological change. A new medium does not add something; it changes everything.
  5. 5) Media tend to become mythic…When a technology become mythic, it is always dangerous because it is then accepted as it is, and is therefore not easily susceptible to modification or control.

We just had a great visit with my dad and his wife. They spent 10 days with us here in Nairobi and out at Masai Mara on safari. We had a great time in the Mara! Here are some of the pictures from our time.
